I was talking to a friend of mine about my job hunting strategies, and he suggested I just Google it - so I did. In response, I received a message I was definitely not expecting.
Two men went into a room; two out of 308 representatives worked out a plan and decided between themselves not to have an election. That is not how minority governments should work. Instead, this is a manifestation of our excessively partisan political system in Canada. Not only are MPs whipped into voting with their party, at the behest of the leader, but now the leader does not even consult those MPs before making his decision.
CBC News had a lady named Donna, a radio host from Alberta, on their show around 11:20 today. Donna kept saying that Albertans want their votes to count, they are troubled by the coalition, and some would prefer another election. Well, the people who didn’t vote for the conservatives, the majority of Canadians, also want their votes to count. Removing the per-vote public funding makes voting for a party, in a riding that is locked by another, a complete waste.
It is far too easy to demonstrate the unfairness in our electoral system here in Canada. For example, if the distribution of seats in the House of Commons were truly reflective of how Canadians voted, then the Green Party of Canada would have about twenty three seats — not zero.
